Dear Ms. Ramirez,
It is admirable that you want to add to the evidence base of nursing! "Good on you" --as they say here in New Zealand. To break the process down in manageable pieces, I'd suggest you first think about what it is that you believe needs to be re-searched. Ask yourself things like: What do I do at work that may be based on custom vs. scientific evidence? What piece of information do I/others really need to do a better job for patients/family? What interests me deeply? (Or, what do I have a passion for studying? Given this project may involve a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, you need to be sure within yourself that this is what you sense is congruent/authentic with who you are, and your mission in life.)
Next (or perhaps a bit concurrently with the above step), dig up literature about your question or topic. Do a search from PubMed, CINAHL, GoogleScholar, or some such place. Get a sense of what is already the state of knowing about this topic. It will help you hone your topic down to a managable size and let you know if others have already answered your question...as well as give you a lot of other info.
At this point, if not earlier, I'd link up with a researcher. Preferably a nurse with a doctoral degree. Let this researcher mentor you further along the process. If you live and work out in the "boonies" where there is no such mentor, you might want to find out who the experts on the topic are in the world. Using email you can ask an expert to be a mentor. Remember a good mentor is likely a very busy person who might not be interested in helping unless they perceive some reward in the experience for them. For example, you could ask how the mentor's research might benefit from using you to collect data for them. Then you could work alongside the mentor to complete this research--and use a piece of it to present at congress (or whatever you agree on with the mentor).
Best wishes!

I'm actually quite interested in doing a research project and maybe even
present a poster at a congress someday. I just have no idea where to begin.
I have been active at carrying out process improvements, but can't seem to
find where the next step is.
