The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 35,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty area. The Advanced Nursing Research SIG was established in 1989.
Advanced Nursing Research SIG Mission Statement
The Advanced Nursing Research SIG has developed a plan consistent with the mission of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and the defined purposes of SIGs. The major strategic goals are:
- to provide a forum for networking and communication among advanced nurse researchers in oncology;
- to provide advanced nurse researchers with increased access to professional continuing education;
- to implement research activities to develop the knowledge base for oncology nursing practice and promote the utilization of new knowledge in oncology nursing practice.
Goals
- Develop and implement effective tools for networking and communication among advanced nurse researchers.
- Provide educational colloquia on research strategies and other subjects of interest to advanced nurse researchers.
- Promote collaborative, multi-site research.
Activities
The Advanced Nursing Research SIG has chosen to fulfill its mission and goals through activities such as developing and distributing an electronic mail directory and providing software reviews in their newsletter. The SIG is also planning and participating in research consensus conferences, exploring ways to share their expertise in conducting multi-site studies, investigating an instructional video on how to develop and present a poster, and collaborating with various ONS project teams to prepare topic submissions for presentation at ONS educational events.
Benefits/Communication
The SIG meets once per year during the ONS Annual Congress. Advanced Nursing Research SIG members communicate regularly with SIG members through written
communiques, and through a newsletter. The newsletter features timely articles of interest to advanced nurse researchers, software reviews, messages from SIG leaders, and reports on SIG projects and activities. SIG members also receive special communications regarding funding opportunities and health policy issues.
Membership Requirements
All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
